About Electrodes and accessories

Why is a salt bridged commonly used with the reference electrode?

Source:Corrtest Time:2024-12-26 View:0

Due to the difference of solution inside the reference electrode and the solution in the testing system, it forms a liquid junction interface between the solutions. As the solution’s concentration and types of ions it contains are different on each side, there will be potential difference on the interface, resulting in ion exchange between the two solutions, and ultimately leading to inaccurate reference electrode potential. The use of a salt bridge can alleviate this problem to a certain extent.
