Theoretically, CE counter electrode can be of many materials, aims to form a current loop with WE. Mainly platinum CE and graphite CE.
In fact, carbon paper, carbon cloth, and titanium mesh are also available. But in electrocatalysis, platinum electrode and graphite are the mainstream for CE.
If it is a single-chamber cell, please avoid Pt counter electrode for HER and ORR.But this does not necessarily mean that the graphite counter electrode is better.
Graphite is easily oxidized, and there are pits in the slag, which may cause the current to be unstable.
In addition, there are literatures that the CO produced by the oxidation of graphite on the surface may poison the catalytic reaction.
As for OER, because it’s not very sensitive to Pt, Pt is relatively good.
The area of the counter electrode is generally larger than that of the working electrode, and better to be directly opposite to the working electrode, which is conducive to uniform current field distribution.
